This weekend we are at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Resort in Cambridge, Maryland. We have been here many times over the years yet we have never ventured off the resort. Today was a beautiful day and we decided to go sightseeing. We drove around historic Cambridge and were very pleasantly surprised.
We found the beautiful Choptank River Lighthouse; a fantastic playground next to the visitor’s center; beautiful historic houses along the river and cute little shops. We also found a good restaurant Rock Lobstah, with large portions of delicious king crab legs and homemade potato salad. My daughter was delighted with her unique grilled cheese bites – in the form of fondue. We never would have had such a wonderful new experience if we hadn’t left the Hyatt Resort.
On a trip to the Dominican Republic I left the compound for an errand. I waved down a motorbike (as they do in the DR). After my errand the driver offered a tour of the area and I spent the day seeing it from the perspective of a local. It was one of my greatest cultural experiences. Being on the resort is nice but I didn’t experience the Dominican culture.
So next time you book that trip to a resort, look for an excursion – a reason to see something beyond the walls – to get to know the people and their life.
