I also met the gentleman next door – my pal Johnny. He is a lovely ‘older man’ and a former Rotarian. He is married to a beautiful lady from Cuba, but she is away visiting her kids. Johnny has been very kind to run us around the island and my daughter loves to help him feed his birds. I often have a tea with him on his front porch and hear the fascinating stories of his life in Montserrat (he lost everything in the volcano eruption).
One day he took us to English Harbor where we met a relative Eloise. He treated me to a nice birthday lunch as we admired the massive yachts (including one of the largest sailboats in the world at 150 feet). Eloise is a lovely lady who gave us a a great personal tour of English Harbor on her golf cart.
Even though I haven’t been able to meet his wife he tells me so much that I feel as if I have met her. His sister lives nearby and he took us over to meet her and her daughter. I also met his son when we went boating with the neighbors.
Today Johnny took us to Jolly Harbor. It’s so close on the map, but takes a while as you have to go through some small villages. There’s a nice harbor with all kinds of pretty boats. There are several shops and restaurants and we ate at Melini’s Italian Restaurant. The service left a little to be desired, the pizza was good but could have been crispier – the company was the best part.
Once again, we had the opportunity to experience Antigua with the locals… PRICELESS!
