One of my most practical and useful travel tips is to call a hotel directly when trying to book a better rate. I recently rented my house on VRBO and decided to take my family to the Hyatt Chesapeake Resort and Spa in Cambridge, Maryland for the weekend. I looked online at several sites and being a big AMEX user, consulted their travel department as well. Everyone of those sources gave me prices in the $200-300’s per night. I called the property directly and asked for the best rate – military, AAA, AARP (I qualify for all) – and she quoted me $109 per night!
I was thrilled to death that I was renting my house for $500 a night and paying $109. So even with all the extras and eating out we made a profit going away for the weekend. We might not have if I had not called the property directly.
I know we can’t all join the military but it does help having membership in AARP and AAA as well.
